What each parameter means
-
utm_source
Who sends you the visit: facebook, instagram, linkedin, newsletter, the publisher's name. Write it the way GA4 knows it or the channel will be wrong.
What UTM parameters are → -
utm_medium
The type of traffic: cpc, paid_social, email, social, referral, display, affiliate. It weighs most when GA4 picks the channel.
Which medium to use when → -
utm_campaign
The campaign name, identical on every link: black-friday-2026, course-launch. That way it adds up as one line in your reports.
What to measure per campaign → -
utm_term and utm_content
Optional. Term holds the paid keyword; content tells apart ads or links in the same campaign, such as video-1 and video-2.
When to use term and content → -
Unassigned
Where GA4 puts traffic it cannot classify. Usually a made-up medium (offline, qr, whatsapp) or a misspelt source.
How to avoid Unassigned traffic → -
(direct)
Visits with no known origin. An untagged link in a PDF, an app or an email can end up here, and the campaign behind it is lost.
What direct traffic is →
The channel follows the rules Google publishes for GA4's default channel group and its official list of search engines, social networks, video sites and shops. If your property uses a custom channel group, the result may differ.
UTM parameters: frequently asked questions
-
A tool that adds UTM parameters to a URL (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and, optionally, utm_term and utm_content) so Google Analytics 4 knows which campaign each visit came from. This one also tells you which GA4 channel the link will land in before you publish it.
-
Because the source and medium combination matches none of the rules in GA4's default channel group. It happens with made-up mediums (offline, qr, whatsapp) and with sources GA4 does not recognise, such as “x” instead of “twitter” or “meta” instead of “facebook”. Paste your values above and you will see the channel straight away.
-
Not if auto-tagging is on: the gclid already passes the campaign, ad group and keyword from Google Ads to GA4. UTMs are essential everywhere else: Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, newsletters, banners and affiliates.
-
No. A UTM on an internal link changes the visit's origin halfway through and wipes out the campaign that actually brought it. To measure clicks inside your site, use GA4 events.
