Bing retires its SOAP APIs on 31 August, and its index is the one ChatGPT reads

August 10, 2026

Microsoft has set a date: on 31 August, requests to the Bing Webmaster Tools SOAP/POX APIs stop being served. After that date only JSON/HTTP works. The migration itself is hardly dramatic. Every method remains available with identical functionality, the API key does not change, and quotas, rate limits and permissions stay the same. It is a change in how you structure the request, not in capabilities. If you have automations pulling from that API, it is an afternoon of work.

Why does the Bing API change matter in the current context?

What I find most interesting is the context, not the migration. For years, Bing Webmaster Tools has been that tool almost everyone sets up once and then abandons. That made sense when Bing was 3% of traffic. It does not anymore. ChatGPT's web search leans on Bing's index. If your page is not indexed there, ChatGPT's retrieval layer cannot see it, and it cannot cite you from a page it has never seen.

That turns Bing Webmaster Tools into something different from what it was: it goes from being a secondary traffic dashboard to being an AI visibility diagnostic tool. That is where you check whether your URLs are indexed in the index ChatGPT drinks from.

My practical recommendation for the Bing API change

First, check whether you have live integrations against the old API and migrate before the 31st. Second, and more important, go into Bing Webmaster Tools and actually check what you have indexed. If you have not looked at it in years, you will probably find surprises. You do not need to build a Bing strategy. You need to stop treating it as if it did not exist.
